Hey! I'm
Dr Val Thépot
Husband / Father / Sea Farmer / Scientist
My story
I grew up on a dairy farm in Brittany, northwest France, but my life changed when I moved to the South Finistère coast. It was love at first sight. I plunged into the “warm” 14°C waters, and from that moment, the ocean claimed me. Since then, I’ve lived my life beside it, on it, or beneath its surface. My journey has taken me from Brittany to California, Queensland, and now Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory.
From milking cows and driving tractors to skippering commercial vessels and farming fish, oysters, and seaweed—punctuated by years of scientific research culminating in a PhD in Aquaculture, I’ve built a life around our blue planet. Today, as a father of three and a citizen of this mostly-ocean world (71% water coverage), I’m a committed advocate for a circular economy, sustainable food systems, and mindful living.
Earth, our “blue marble”, has survived 4.5 billion years of change, but we are now at a tipping point. This website exists to share my passion for the ocean from unique perspectives, and to remind us all of its fragility if taken for granted. Change may seem daunting, but together and through our daily choices, we humans (Homo sapiens, “the wise ones”) can turn the tide.
